The Samyukt Kisan Morch and the Joint Platform of Central Trade Unions have written to all political parties of the Indian Union urging them to support the nationwide and rural strikes on February 16.

Sources said a letter has been sent to all opposition parties urging them to extend support to the strike, which involves issues such as minimum support price, minimum wage of Rs 26,000 per month, repeal of new labor laws and other issues.

Sources in the SKM said they have received support from the Communist Party of India (Marxist), CPI and DMK so far.

“This is the last push before the vote. We have written to all non-NDA parties and asked for their support as they have also been raising these issues. If they support our strike, people will also know who to vote for Not the BJP,” said an SKM leader.

They said the “Industrial/Sectoral Strike and Grameen Band” has the support of trade unions and different mass organizations of students, youth, women and other sectors, including teachers and transport operators.

“To ensure that the strike and bandh action have a greater impact across the country, the two platforms have agreed to incorporate the Joint Statement on Industrial/Sectoral Strike and Grameen Bandh on February 16, 2024 and the Charter of Demand ” Sent to all non-NDA political parties,” read the letter sent to political parties.

After the farmers’ protests in 2020-21, SKM expressed its opposition to the BJP in the subsequent elections but did not support any other political party.

In 2020-21, SKM-led farmers’ agitation took place at Delhi borders against three farm laws, which were later repealed by the government.

Protest groups distanced opposition leaders from their agitation.
