Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) head coach Chandrakant Pandit praised Shriyas Iyer after the star batsman scored in the second innings of the Ranji Trophy final against Vidarbha Scored 95 runs for Mumbai. Iyer scored just 7 runs in the first innings but hit 10 fours and 3 sixes in a whirlwind batting. Pandit, who will join forces with Iyer during IPL 2024, praised the KKR skipper’s fearlessness and likened his batting to his century in the World Cup semi-finals.
“It was an important innings for Shrias and he bowled one at a crucial moment. Although the format was different, his innings was the same as the one in the World Cup semi-final against New Zealand at Wankhede Stadium Very similar (when he scored 105 runs in 70 deliveries). He was playing good cricket but had bad luck and he failed to score well in the last few games,” Pandit told Comments Comments.
“The fact that he smashed 10 boundaries and three sixes shows that he is playing fearlessly and has not changed his style of play. This innings will work in his favour,” he added.
To the untrained eye, Iyer smashed 105 off just 70 balls in the ODI World Cup semi-final against New Zealand.
After the Ranji Trophy final, Iyer will team up with KKR’s Chandrakant Pandit, who missed last season’s IPL due to injury.
Pandit also praised Mumbai skipper Ajinkya Rahane’s batting in the second innings, saying the veteran played the best batting for his team.
“I like his (Musheer’s) approach and his partnership with Iyer might have given Vidrabha a hard time. But I think the best knock came from Ajinkya (73). He scored when Umesh Yadav was in good form. With so many runs on the board now, it will be very difficult for Vidarbha,” he concluded.
