Former Australia cricket team wicketkeeper Adam Gilchrist believes the crowd’s reaction to Hardik Pandya during IPL 2024 showed Rohit Sharma’s success in Popularity and support among supporters. Hardik ended Rohit’s ten-year tenure as captain of Mumbai Indians after completing a blockbuster deal with Gujarat Titans. However, under his leadership, MI lost all three matches in IPL 2024, with Hardik even being booed by the crowd during the match. Gilchrist pointed out that the process of Hardik’s transfer to MI was “mysterious” and the fans’ reaction to the MI captain actually showed their “tribalism and intensity”.

“It shows you Rohit Sharma’s place in the game. The mysterious way it all happened initially, the speed it happened, Mumbai letting Hardik Pandya leave for Gujarat and then Rohit giving up the captaincy , everyone was shocked.” It was weird. But that’s the nature of the IPL beast. Tribalism and intensity within the fan base. It’s hard to replicate that intensity anywhere else,” Gilchrist said on the Club Prairie Fire podcast.

Gilchrist also recalled an incident when he was booed by Australian fans at home. In 1999, he replaced the famous wicketkeeper Ian Healy in the Australian Test team, but when he made his ODI debut, the response from fans was not good.

“I got hit hard on the pitch. And then walked away all the way. So I know how (Hardik) feels and I’m going to keep working hard and I’m going to put him through… I’m the boo whisperer, I know how to get in their mind and let them pass. I will contact Hardik, I have sent the message to MS and I will keep you posted, I will contact him and we can get into his mind and help him, get out of the mess they are in .”
