Some workers of the Shiv Sena, led by Eknath Shinde, burned down the building of National Conference leader Omar Abdullah in Thane, nearly 23 km from Mumbai. Omar Abdullah for opposing the construction of the Maharashtra Bhavan on a 2.5-acre land in Budgam, Jammu and Kashmir.
The workers first tried to burn an effigy of Mr Abdullah but were stopped by police, and then they burned pictures of him. They also raised slogans against him.
Recently, the Maharashtra cabinet approved the purchase of land in Budgam. However, the former Jammu and Kashmir chief minister said last week that he would review the agreement if his government comes to power.
“The Eknath Shinde government proposed setting up a bhavan in Kashmir from a tourism point of view so that people from Maharashtra can go there and get help there. However, Omar Abdullah opposed it , that’s why we took to the streets,” said Rahul Londhe, spokesman for the Eknath Shinde camp.
He further warned that if need be, “workers will go to Kashmir and throw shoes at Omar Abdullah”.
Mr Lund also hit out at Uddhav Thackeray, an ally of Omar Abdullah under the opposition India Bloc alliance.
Earlier, Shiv Sena leader Manisha Kayande warned that Abdullah would not be allowed to enter Maharashtra. “Why did Omar Abdullah oppose the Maharashtra Assembly? When violence broke out in Jammu and Kashmir, Omar Abdullah was studying in Mumbai. He stayed in Maharashtra and completed his studies. Has he forgotten that?” Ms Kayande said.
She also said that if he “threats us, we will ensure that you do not enter Maharashtra”.
