Serbian tennis player Dejana Radanovic, who recently competed in three International Tennis Federation tournaments in India, has faced backlash for her racist comments about India.
in a series of social media posts, Radanovich criticized India’s “food, transportation and sanitation.”
Radanovic, who has been in India for nearly two weeks, wrote in one of her posts: “Goodbye India. Never seen again,” along with a picture of the airport.
After arriving in Munich, Radanovic shared another post that read: “Hello civilization. Only someone who has experienced a place like India for three weeks can understand what it feels like.”
Regarding the traffic, she wrote: “But I have to admit, they are great drivers and the traffic can be fun sometimes. You may never know what your day will look like and what will happen, everyone keeps pressing Horn, like the rush hour game.”
Amid the backlash to the posts, Radanovic shared another Instagram Stories update that seemed to explain her stance. Radanovich insisted that her remarks were not directed at the people of India but the country and therefore could not be called racist.
She wrote: “Omg I can’t believe what we actually need to talk about. I don’t like India as a country. I don’t like the food, the traffic, the hygiene (bugs in the food, yellow pillows in the hotels and filth sheets, don’t know how to use the roundabout, etc.)
Furthermore, Radanovic wrote: “If you come to my country, Serbia, and you don’t like all these same things, that means you are a racist??? What the hell does this have to do with racism? ?! I have friends of all nationalities and colors so don’t go there because it’s absolute bullshit!”
Radanovic, 27, participated in three W50 events in Pune, Bengaluru and Indore during his tour of India.
