Rajasthan Royals skipper Sanju Samson wrote history in the Indian Premier League (IPL) on Wednesday as he scored against Gujarat Titans half a century of glory. This is Samson’s third half-century in the ongoing IPL 2024, which is enough to break the all-time record previously held by Rohit Sharma of Mumbai Indians. Samson remained unbeaten on 68 off 38 deliveries, the highest score by a cricketer in his 50th match as captain. Rohit had previously scored 65 off 48 balls in his 50th match as captain of Mumbai Indians in 2016 against Delhi Capitals.

Most runs scored in cricketer’s 50th match as IPL captain –

68* (38) – Sanju Samson (RR) vs GT, 2024

65 (48) – Rohit Sharma (MI) vs DC, 2016

59 (46) – Gautam Gambhir (KKR) vs RCB, 2013

45 (33) – David Warner (SRH) vs DC, 2021

A half-century wasn’t enough and RR suffered its first loss in IPL 2024, thanks to a gritty batting performance from Shubman Gill and the likes of Rahul Tewatia and Rashid Khan’s explosive knock.

Yuzvendra Chahal and Kuldeep Sen brought RR back into the game with some good bowling, but GT finished off the run chase on the last ball of the match. Earlier, Samson and Riyan Parag’s performances took the GT bowlers to a clean slate with their finest batting.

While Samson performed well in IPL 2024, the same cannot be said for Rohit Sharma. He was replaced as MI captain by Hardik Pandya before the start of the new season and his batting performance so far has left fans and experts alike unsatisfied.
