Samsung will not be using Galaxy AI features in its Galaxy S24 lineup in China and will instead rely on Chinese tech giant Baidu’s Ernie AI due to Google’s limited presence in the country.
According to CNBC report, Ernie AI will offer the same Galaxy AI features based on the Gemini Foundational Model, such as AI-based real-time call translation, summarization, and text format features on the Chinese version of the Galaxy S24 series.
The Chinese version of Google’s ‘Circle to Search’ feature will also be available in the Galaxy S24 phone. “Now featuring Ernie’s understanding and creation capabilities, the advanced Samsung Note Assistant can translate text and longer content into clear, intelligently organized formats at the click of a button,” Samsung Electronics China and Baidu said in a statement. Ernie Chatbot is powered by AI technology that is capable of generating human-like responses to users’ prompts. Ernie version 4.0 was launched in October. Baidu claims this is “the most powerful version of the Ernie Foundation model yet”.
“It has been significantly improved over the online version of Ernie Bot and is now no less than GPT-4,” CEO Robin Li said during the ‘Baidu World 2023’ event in October.
The advent of ChatGPT – and the flood of AL models from US-based tech giants like Bard, Gemini and LLAMA – forced Chinese tech companies to develop their own large language models (LLMs). Baidu developed Ernie Bot and Alibaba Group created its own LLM called Tongyi Qianwen.
