A body found in the Thames three weeks ago is believed to be that of missing student Samaria Ayanle, police said.

The 19-year-old was last seen at her university accommodation in central London in the early hours of February 22, but was not reported missing until staff alerted police on March 8.

Detectives are treating her death as “unexplained”.

The Metropolitan Police said police were called at 8.19am on February 22 after a member of the public reported seeing a body on the north shore near Putney Pier.

It comes just hours after Ms Ayanle was last seen near Marble Arch.

Police said the body was found without any personal belongings and a fingerprint test came back “negative.”

A Met spokesman added: “Police checked recent missing persons reports but the body did not match the description of anyone else reported missing at the time.

“The body has been sent to the coroner for further examination. In the meantime, details have been uploaded to the UK Missing Persons Database in the hope that the person can be identified.

“After Samaritan was reported missing, police linked their investigation to the discovery on February 22 on Wednesday, March 13. They viewed footage of the body from that time and believe the person found was Samaritan. Ya.”

The body has not been formally identified.

Detectives are appealing for anyone with information about her disappearance to contact us.

Ms Ayanle’s body was apparently discovered last month after Police found the bodies of two men Search for alkali attack suspect Abdul Ezedi in the Thames on February 10.
