Sam Altman is worth $2 billion not because of OpenAI

Altman becomes CEO of OpenAI, becoming spokesperson for artificial intelligence

New Delhi:

OpenAI founder and CEO Sam Altman sees his net worth cross the $2 billion mark Bloomberg Billionaires Index. However, while he is at the helm of the artificial intelligence research company, the company’s financial success does not contribute to the above numbers.

This is the first time the index has assessed the wealth of the 38-year-old, who has become the face of artificial intelligence through his role as CEO of OpenAI, a company that was recently valued at $86 billion.

According to Bloomberg, Altman has repeatedly claimed that he does not own an equity stake in the company. In fact, the report adds, most of his traceable wealth lies in a network of venture capital funds and startup investments.

In addition, his wealth will continue to grow with Reddit’s IPO, of which he is one of the largest shareholders.

Meanwhile, Tesla CEO Elon Musk sues OpenAI Sam Altman accused him of violating a contractual agreement signed in 2015 when Musk helped create the maker of ChatGPT.

The lawsuit filed Thursday in San Francisco says Altman and OpenAI co-founder Greg Brockman initially approached Musk about making it open source.

The lawsuit adds that the open source company pledges that it will develop AI technology for the “benefit of humanity.”

In the lawsuit, Tesla’s CEO claims the Microsoft-backed company violated that agreement by focusing on seeking profits.

It must be noted that Musk co-founded OpenAI as early as 2015. However, the billionaire resigned from the company’s board of directors in 2018. Subsequently, in October 2022, Musk acquired Twitter for US$44 billion.

OpenAI’s chatbot ChatGPT became the world’s fastest-growing software application in just six months after its launch in November 2022.

Not only that, but ChatGPT sparked the launch of rival chatbots from the likes of Microsoft, Alphabet and a slew of startups that capitalized on the hype to secure billions of dollars in funding.

Since ChatGPT’s debut, several companies have adopted it to perform a variety of tasks. This includes summarizing documentation, writing computer code, sparking competition among big tech companies, and launching their own products based on generative artificial intelligence.
