Moscow:
Russia said on Sunday that Ukrainian drones had attacked the Moscow-controlled Zaporizhia nuclear power plant, and the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) urged restraint.
Europe’s largest Zaporozhye nuclear power plant has been occupied by Russian troops since they began their offensive in Ukraine in 2022.
“Ukrainian armed forces attacked the dome of the sixth nuclear power plant of the Zaporozhye Nuclear Power Plant (ZNPP),” the management of the Moscow-controlled nuclear power plant said on social media.
It is claimed that the attack did not result in the release of radioactive material.
Late on Sunday, the International Atomic Energy Agency said on X (formerly Twitter) that its experts “confirmed the physical impact of today’s drone strike on the ZNPP, including on one of its six reactors.”
Rafael Grossi, head of the International Atomic Energy Agency, noted that “at least three direct attacks have occurred on the containment structure of the ZNPP main reactor.”
Grossi stressed: “This cannot happen. I firmly call on military decision-makers not to take any action that violates the basic principles of protecting nuclear facilities.”
The International Atomic Energy Agency said the damage to Unit 6 did not affect nuclear safety, but warned that “this is a serious incident that has the potential to undermine the integrity of the reactor containment system.”
Russia’s nuclear agency ROSATOM urged the West and Grossi to “firmly condemn attempts to escalate the situation around Europe’s largest nuclear power plant.”
The drone allegedly hit the factory’s canteen, injuring three staff members, one of whom was “seriously” injured.
The International Atomic Energy Agency said late Sunday that one casualty was reported.
