Robert Vadra hints at contesting Lok Sabha polls

Robert Vadra, husband of Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, has hinted at his political debut – from the party’s stronghold in Uttar Pradesh Messi (Amethi) is a sensation. On Thursday night, he declared that “if I decide to become a councillor, the people of Amisi want me to represent them…”.

Amthi will go to polls on May 20, which is the fifth phase of voting. Results will be announced on June 4.

Mr Vadra faces multiple corruption charges, including an Enforcement Directorate investigation into alleged money laundering in the purchase of property in London, England.

Amici candidate for Congress?

The Congress will contest 17 of the 80 seats in the Lok Sabha, while the remaining 63 seats will be contested by India Bloc ally Samajwadi Party and regional bodies. The party has announced candidates for 14 seats so far.

The party has been silent on the candidacy of Amici and Labarelli.

Last month there were strong speculations that Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi would pose a high-profile dual challenge to the Bharatiya Janata Party, which has dominated electoral politics for the past decade.

Gandhi was supposed to contest from the Amethi seat, which he held from 2004 to 2014, before unexpectedly losing to Smriti Irani in the 2019 elections. The senior Congress leader lost by more than 50,000 votes.

Ms Irani, his rival in 2014 and 2019, is tasked with defending her seat in this election.

Therefore, the BJP’s plans for Amethi are clear.

Less clear are the plans for Raebareli, which since 2004 has been chaired by former Congress president Sonia Gandhi. However, Mrs Gandhi will not contest this election. She has been transferred to the Federal Council.
