Rishi Sunak returns when asked about Liz Truss’ deep state conspiracy

Rishi Sunak has mocked his ex Liz Truss after being asked about her deep state conspiracy.

Truss, Britain’s shortest-serving prime minister, has previously accused the “deep state” of “sabotaging” Kwasi Kwateng’s tax cuts in his notoriously disastrous 2022 mini-budget.

She echoed comments from Donald Trump, who claimed a secret network of powerful officials and state agencies were plotting to overthrow him.

In a recent article fox news tv “In too many parts of the free world, the left has been in power for too long, and the results are clear. Their agents are too active in public and private institutions and in what we call the administrative state and the deep state,” she said.

Mr Sunak was asked for comment by MPs at the Commons Liaison Committee on Wednesday.

Conservative MP William Large asked the prime minister: “What did you think or say about your predecessor when she said she was undermined by the ‘deep state’?”

Mr Sunak laughed and replied: “I think that’s probably her problem, not mine.”

Large again pressed him on the issue: “Is there a deep state? Are you part of it? Am I part of it?”

The Tory leader responded: “Probably a question to ask her… If I were, I probably wouldn’t tell you, wouldn’t I? We wouldn’t tell anyone else, would we?”

Ms Truss has previously been criticized for her claims of witnessing unnamed figures and institutions “undermining my efforts to cut taxes, reduce the size of government and restore democratic accountability in the UK”.

Her brief period in No. 10 is best remembered for her disastrous mini-budget, which sent the pound plunging and triggered a market crash.

The failed prime minister is now trying to place himself at the forefront of a new kind of right-wing politics, most recently launching the so-called Popular Conservatism movement.

The popular conservative group claimed it was not a direct challenge to Mr Sunak’s leadership but that it hoped to put pressure on the Prime Minister to cut taxes, adopt a tough immigration policy and withdraw from the European Convention on Human Rights.
