Right-wing groups approach Agra court to sue Taj Mahal over annual Ur Festival

A right-wing group has filed a petition in an Agra court seeking an injunction against viewing “Urs” at the Taj Mahal.

The petitioner Akhil Bharat Hindu Mahasabha has also challenged the free entry of “Urs” to the Taj Mahal.

The court accepted the petition and set a hearing date of March 4.

This year’s three-day “Urs” event will take place from February 6 to 8.

This period commemorates the death of Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan, who built the Taj Mahal on the banks of the Yamuna River in 1653.

Anil Kumar Tiwari, counsel for the petitioner said: “On Friday, the petitioner ABHM, through its branch chief Meena Diwakar and district president Saurabh Sharma, submitted a complaint to the No. The petition was filed before the Court IV Additional Civil Judge (Junior Division) Room No. 4.

“They have sought a permanent injunction against the committee for celebrating Urs. The petitioners have also objected to free entry of the Urs family to the Taj Mahal,” ABHM spokesperson Sanjay Jat claimed. The petition was filed under an RTI, which revealed that neither the Mughals nor the British allowed Urs to be held inside the Taj Mahal.

“The petition was filed based on an RTI filed by Agra city historian Raj Kishore Raje. In the RTI, he asked the ASI who allowed ‘Urs’ celebrations and ‘Namaz’ events to be held at the Taj Mahal premises. The ASI replied, Neither the Mughals nor the British government nor the Indian government allowed ‘Urs’ celebrations at the Taj Mahal,” Sanjay Jat told PTI.

“Therefore, on this basis, we have filed a petition seeking an injunction to stop the organizers of the Shah Jahan ‘Urs’ Celebration Committee headed by Syad Ibrahim Zaidi from Taj Mahal celebrates ‘Urs’.” The three-day “Urs” includes rituals like “chadar poshi”, “sandal”, “gusul”, “kul”, etc.

On the last day of ‘Urs’, ‘chadar’ of 1,880 meters or more is offered.
