Beirut:

Lebanon’s Iran-backed Hezbollah group said it launched drone and missile attacks on Israeli bases on Wednesday in response to an attack the previous day that killed three Hezbollah fighters.

Since the Palestinian group attacked southern Israel on October 7, triggering the war in the Gaza Strip, Israel and Hamas ally Hezbollah have been exchanging cross-border fire almost every day.

But Wednesday’s incident marked the third consecutive day of Hezbollah attacks on injured Israelis, with tensions high in the region as Iran launched a direct attack on Israel over the weekend in retaliation for a deadly attack on the Damascus consulate in Tehran.

Hezbollah said it “launched a coordinated attack with guided missiles and explosive drones on a new military reconnaissance command center in Arab Alamshey, a majority-Arab village in northern Israel.”

The movement said the attack was “in response to enemy assassinations of a number of resistance fighters in Ain Bar and Shehabiya on Tuesday.”

Magen David Adom, the Israeli equivalent of the Red Cross, said six people were injured in an attack in Western Galilee.

Rescue workers said on X (original Twitter) that the six injured were “men in their 30s, one of whom was seriously injured.”

The Israeli military said it had “detected multiple missiles fired from Lebanon that entered the Arab Aramshah area,” adding that the missiles hit the source of the fire.

Israel said on Tuesday its attack in southern Lebanon killed two local Hezbollah commanders and another operative, and Iran-backed Hezbollah said three of its members were killed when it fired rockets in retaliation.

Local Israeli authorities said three people were wounded in a Lebanese attack earlier in the day.

Hezbollah targeted Israeli troops with explosive devices on Monday, wounding four soldiers as they entered Lebanese territory, the first such attack in the six-month conflict.

According to AFP statistics, the violence has killed at least 368 people in Lebanon, most of them Hezbollah fighters, but also at least 70 civilians.

In Israel, the military said 10 soldiers and eight civilians had been killed near the northern border since hostilities began.

Tens of thousands of civilians have fled their homes on both sides of the border, and the violence has heightened fears of an all-out conflict between Hezbollah and Israel, which last fought a war in 2006.
