The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has announced that Rs 2,000 notes will no longer be exchanged or accepted on April 1 due to annual account closure. The RBI announced that the service will resume on April 2.
“Due to annual closing related operations, exchange/deposit services of Rs 2,000 notes will cease from Monday, April 1, 2024, at the 19 issuing offices of the Reserve Bank of India. The service will resume on April 1, 2024. Tuesday, April 2, 2024,” the Reserve Bank of India said in a statement.
As of February 29, the RBI said about 97.62% of the 2,000-rupee notes had returned to the banking system.
On May 19, 2023, the Reserve Bank of India announced that it would stop circulating 2,000 rupee notes and urged the public to deposit them in banks or exchange them for notes of other denominations. This is part of the bank’s clean notes policy.
However, the Reserve Bank of India continues to provide deposit or exchange facilities of Rs 2,000 notes at its 19 offices across the country, located in Ahmedabad, Bengaluru, Bhopal, Bhubaneswar, Chandigarh, Chennai, Guwahati, Hyderabad, Jaipur, Jammu, Kanpur, Kolkata, Mumbai, Nagpur, New Delhi, Patna, Thiruvananthapuram, Ranchi and Raipur.
