The Kansas City Royals and versatile Adam Frazier have agreed to a one-year, $4.5 million contract that provides the club with a left-handed bat and some versatility in the lineup, according to multiple reports.

Frazier is reportedly making $2 million this season, with a $8.5 million mutual aid option for next season and a $2.5 million buyout. The deal is pending a medical.

Frazier, 32, played for the AL East champion Baltimore Orioles last season, hitting a career-high 13 home runs and 60 RBIs in 141 games, while batting .240. He primarily played second base in Baltimore, but the Royals wanted to use him at multiple positions; he also played shortstop, third base and all three outfield positions during his career.

Frazier was an All-Star in 2021 when he started the season with the Pittsburgh Pirates and was traded to the San Diego Padres in July. He hit .305 that season and displayed a low strikeout rate that should translate well into the Kansas City lineup and Kauffman Stadium.

The Royals appear to have their roster nailed down as they prepare for spring training.

Rising star Bobby Witt Jr. plays shortstop, Michael Massey is expected to start at second base, and another young cornerstone, Maikel Garcia, will handle third base main responsibilities. The Royals added Hunter Renfroe in free agency to provide some pop to the lineup and solidify the outfield, while Drew Waters, Kyle Isbell Kyle Isbel and MJ Melendez will compete for the at-bat.

But with injuries playing a big role in the Royals heading into another 100-loss season in 2023, including Frazier on a relatively low-risk deal makes sense. He’s a capable fill-in at multiple positions if Kansas City loses anyone long-term.

The Royals are already one of the busiest teams in free agency.

In addition to bolstering the lineup by signing Renfrow and the versatile Garrett Hampson, they’ve all but completely revamped their pitching staff. They signed Seth Lugo to a three-year, $45 million contract and starter Michael Wacha to a two-year, $32 million deal. ‘s contract fills two glaring holes in the rotation. They also signed left-handed reliever Will Smith to $5 million to close out the game and right-handed reliever Chris Stratton to $4 million. to stay ahead.

The Royals also added right-handed starter Kyle Wright, who will be ready in 2025 after recovering from shoulder surgery.
