Props from Netflix series 'The Crown' fetch high marks at London auction

London:

UK sales of sets, costumes and props from Netflix’s hit series The Crown will end on Thursday after sales of several items exceeded expectations, netting tens of thousands of pounds.

Hundreds of items from the award-winning drama – from signed scripts to sports cars – are up for grabs at the two-day London auction, which includes a live auction on Wednesday.

One of them, a green 1987 Jaguar XJ-SC convertible (a similar car used to depict Princess Diana owning in The Crown), sold for £70,250 ($88,600), the highest price ever paid at a Bonhams auction.

That was more than four times the low estimate set by the auctioneer.

A replica of the golden State Coach, used for British royal coronations, jubilees and other events, appeared in series three and six of the show and sold for £56,280.

Meanwhile, a replica of the St Edward’s chair used in the first series – known as the ‘Coronation Chair’ – sold for £25,600.

But a replica of the facade of No. 10 Downing Street, the Prime Minister’s office and official residence, sold for £10,880, below its estimate of £20,000 to £30,000.

Some of the costumes worn by “The Crown” actors on screen also attracted considerable bids, with Princess Diana’s clothes and jewelry particularly eye-catching.

A bespoke replica of the coronation dress worn by Claire Foy when she played Queen Elizabeth II at the 1953 coronation has sold for nearly £20,000.

A version of Diana’s so-called “revenge” dress – the daring off-the-shoulder cocktail dress worn by actress Elizabeth Debicki in series five – sold for £12,800.

In 1994, then-husband and now King Charles admitted on television that he had an extramarital affair with his now second wife, Queen Camilla.

Meanwhile, a replica of Diana’s engagement ring, set with a fake sapphire, sold for nearly £8,000.

The auction ends later Thursday with dozens of lots sold via online bidding.

Many of the items on offer, including sets from the show, have been on display in a special exhibition that has toured New York, Los Angeles, Paris and London since early January.

Bonhams said proceeds from Wednesday’s live auction will be used to establish a scholarship program at the National Film and Television School “to allow the next generation of film and television producers to receive world-renowned training”.
