Rome:
Prince Vittorio Emanuele of Savoy, the son of Italy’s last king and a member of a dynasty discredited for collusion with fascism, told AFP on Saturday that he Swiss died at the age of 86.
Italian media quoted a statement from the Savoy royal family as saying he “passed away peacefully in Geneva surrounded by his family.”
His lawyer Sergio Orlandi confirmed in a written message to AFP that the royal “passed away this morning”.
Vittorio Emanuele was born on February 12, 1937 in the southern city of Naples and became the royal patriarch who ruled a unified Italy from 1861 to 1945.
He is the son of the country’s last king, Umberto II, who briefly occupied the throne in 1946.
He left Italy at the age of nine after his grandfather, King Vittorio Emanuele III, collaborated with Benito Mussolini’s fascist regime and its racial laws, with which he was associated under the 1946 constitution. All male descendants of the royal family were banned from entering the country.
After the Italian parliament voted to lift the exile measure, Vittorio Emanuele returned to the country in December 2002 and swore allegiance to the republic, something he had long refused to do.
