Indonesia’s election commission said on Wednesday Prabowo Subianto was elected president of the world’s third-largest democracy, defeating two rivals who had vowed to lodge a legal complaint over the vote results.
Committee chairman Hashim Assiari said Defense Minister Prabowo and his vice presidential running mate Jibrran Raqabmin Raqqa received more than 96 million votes, accounting for about 58.6% of the total votes cast. , enough to secure a majority vote in the first round.
Anies Baswedan received nearly 41 million votes, or 24.9% of the total, while Ganjar Pranowo received 27 million votes, or more than 16%.
Gibran, the eldest son of Prabowo and outgoing leader Joko Widodo, was declared the winner last month after unofficial vote counts showed he had won a majority.
Prabowo, 72, is widely predicted to win in his third bid for the presidency. After a transition period, he will take over as president in October.
Experts say his popularity has soared because of the nationalistic fervor of his populist speeches, his strongman credentials as defense minister and Jokowi’s support.
His rivals Anies and Ganjar have vowed to lodge a complaint with the Constitutional Court over allegations of irregularities and fraud during the election.
But Prabowo’s legal team is confident the result will not be successfully challenged due to his majority and wide victory, local media reported on Tuesday.
