New Delhi:

As the weather department predicts a warmer summer with increased heat waves this year, India’s Election Commission (EC) today issued an advisory to ensure the safety of voters ahead of the Lok Sabha elections.

The India Meteorological Department said temperatures are likely to be above normal in most parts of India from March to May.

The Lok Sabha elections will be held in seven phases. Voting will begin on April 19 and run until June 1. Counting of votes will take place on June 4.

The following are things to note

  • Avoid going out in the sun, especially between 12 noon and 3 pm.
  • Drink enough water as often as possible even if you are not thirsty
  • Wear lightweight, light-colored, loose-fitting, porous cotton clothing. Use goggles, an umbrella/hat, shoes or booties when out in the sun.
  • Avoid strenuous activities when outdoor temperatures are high. Avoid going out to work between 12 noon and 3 p.m.
  • When traveling, take water with you.
  • Avoid alcohol, tea, coffee and carbonated soft drinks, which can dehydrate the body.
  • Avoid high-protein foods and avoid eating stale foods.
  • If working outdoors, wear a hat or umbrella and wipe your head, neck, face and limbs with a damp cloth
  • Do not leave children or pets in parked vehicles.
  • If you feel unwell, seek medical attention immediately.
  • Using ORS, homemade drinks like lassi, torani (rice water), lemon water, buttermilk, etc., helps to rehydrate the body.
  • Keep animals in a cool place and give them plenty of water.
  • Keep your home cool, use curtains, blinds or umbrellas, and open windows at night.
  • Use a fan, wet your clothes, and bathe frequently with cold water.
