A Polish man has been arrested on suspicion of spying on behalf of Russian military intelligence in connection with a plot to assassinate Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy, Polish prosecutors said on Thursday.

The man was accused of preparing to pass airport security information to Russian agents under Polish privacy laws and was arrested in Poland on Wednesday, the Polish State Prosecutor’s Office said in a statement.

The man is seeking to contact Russians directly involved in the war in Ukraine and is expected to pass on details about the Rzeszów-Jasyonka airport in southeastern Poland, close to the Ukrainian border, which is used for international military and humanitarian supplies Portal for Ukraine. It also provides services to leaders and politicians traveling in and out of Ukraine. The airport is controlled by the US military.

If convicted, the man could face up to eight years in prison, the statement said.

Prosecutors said the arrest was the result of close cooperation with Ukrainian prosecutors and security services, who tipped them off and provided key evidence. They said the case is ongoing.

In Germany on Thursday, prosecutors said two German and Russian men were arrested on suspicion of espionage, with one accused of agreeing to attacks on potential targets including U.S. military installations in a bid to disrupt aid to Ukraine.

The two men, Dieter S. and Alexander J., were arrested in the Bavarian city of Bayreuth on Wednesday under German privacy rules, German federal prosecutors said. .

Since Moscow launched its attack on Ukraine in February 2022, several people, including a dual Russian-Spanish citizen, have been arrested in Poland on suspicion of spying for Russia.

For more than two years, EU member Poland has been a staunch supporter of neighboring Ukraine and Zelenskiy’s defense against Russian aggression.
