“The Poachers” is a fictionalized account of true events that exposed the largest ivory poaching network in Indian history. The series is written, created and directed by Emmy Award-winning filmmaker Richie Mehta and stars Nimisha Sajayan, Roshan Mathew and Dibyendu Bhattacharya. It tells the story of a group of Indian Forest Service officials, NGO workers, police officers and ordinary heroes who risk their lives to investigate the case.

After much anticipation, the makers have released the trailer, which will premiere globally on February 23, backed by Alia Bhatt.

The two minute and thirty second trailer reveals a notorious and gruesome crime involving the poaching of elephants for the ivory trade. It captures the helplessness of officials as they work together to bring the culprits to justice. The suspense builds towards the end of the trailer as the criminal network becomes increasingly convoluted. The makers shared the trailer with the caption: “The story of one of India’s largest criminal gangs! #PoacherOnPrime, the new Amazon original crime series set to premiere on February 23rd, trailer is out now!”

Take a look:

The forest is home to elephants and countless other animals and has been their safe haven until poachers arrived. Poachers relentlessly invade, encroach and kill, putting many animals on the endangered species list.

“Poacher” is executive produced by QC Entertainment’s Edward H. Hamm Jr., Raymond Mansfield and Sean McKittrick, in association with Fitted Pictures, Poor Man’s Productions and Eternal Sunshine Productions. Alan MacLex (“A Suitable Boy”) serves as a producer on “A Suitable Picture.” Also from Derry Crime are director of photography John Att, composer Andrew Lockington and editor Beverley Mills.

Actor, entrepreneur and producer Alia Bhatt serves as executive producer through her production company Eternal Sunshine Productions. In the previously released trailer, the once peaceful forest is now engulfed in an unsettling atmosphere. Alia is visibly shaken when she stumbles upon a loaded rifle, spent shell casings and the outline of a lifeless body, horrifying anyone who witnesses the scene. The discovery of this crime makes people think about the equal value of all life, whether human or animal. “Murder is murder,” Alia says in the trailer, emphasizing a very important point.
