A photo of Hamas agents displaying the near-naked body of a German tourist on a Gaza street after the attacks on October 7, 2023, won the Photo of the Year award, sparking huge debate on social media. The tourist, Shani Louk, 23, was found dead weeks after the attack. The disturbing photo was part of a collection of 20 photos that helped The Associated Press win first prize in the International Picture of the Year category earlier this month.
The award is presented by the Donald W. Reynolds School of Journalism at the Missouri School of Journalism.
The news spread like wildfire on social media, with many users slamming the use of Ms Locke’s image as a “gross desecration of Jewish life”.
One user commented on X: “This is wrong and sick.” Another user said: “Today is a dark day for journalism and the world.”
“So horror porn and necrophilia are now the criteria for winning the Reynolds Journalism School’s Photo of the Year award,” a third user commented.
Awards organizers posted clear photos of Ms Louk’s lifeless body on their Instagram page when they announced the win. The photo was later deleted due to backlash.
Shani Roque was taken hostage while attending the Supernova music festival near the Gaza border, which became one of the targets of a surprise attack by Hamas.
She became one of the faces of the war after shocking photos of her body lying in the back of a pickup truck began gaining traction on social media.
A rabbi who spoke to the family said the tattoo artist “was actually murdered after being tortured and who knows what else.”
Shani Locke holds German and Israeli nationality. She lives in Israel but spent part of her childhood in Portland, Oregon, where she attended kindergarten at the Jewish Portland Academy.
