Mumbai police have uncovered more than 200 files and documents related to cases being reviewed by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) of persons arrested last month for allegedly trying to extort Rs 164 crore from a real estate developer, officials said. people. Wednesday.

Police earlier said the six accused arrested in the extortion case had threatened the Education Department to take action against the real estate developer and even kill him if he did not pay up.

An official said that during the course of investigation, the crime branch team found that the accused was in possession of more than 200 files and documents related to the cases being reviewed by the ED.

He said the details came to light during the interrogation of the accused.

He said the police suspected that those arrested might threaten to take action against businessmen and builders to extort more than Rs 100 crore from them.

The official said documents found on those arrested also included those related to the Mahadev betting app case, in which more than 30 people were named as accused.

Last month, a case under IPC section 386 (extortion by intimidation) was registered at the Bandra police station and the crime branch is conducting further investigation into the same.

The official said an “education department officer” was also appointed in the FIR.

Mumbai crime branch officials earlier said the main accused in the extortion case is also a builder who had been the complainant’s partner in a real estate project.

According to the complainant, he and the accused builder were working together to redevelop an old housing society building in Mumbai’s Bandra area.

However, due to the unsatisfactory work performed by the respondent, the association awarded the development rights of the entire house to the complainant.

The complainant then paid back all the outstanding balances owed to the accused, the official said.

Last month, the complainant was informed that the accused would file a complaint with the Economic Offenses Wing (EOW) of Mumbai Police and the Education Department.

To resolve the issue, he met his former partner at a cafe and the accused allegedly demanded Rs 164 crore. He also allegedly threatened the ED to take action against the complainant and even kill him, the FIR said.
