Over 5,000 saris with Jagan Reddy party tags seized in Andhra Pradesh

The Election Commission on Thursday seized 5,472 saris bearing labels of the ruling YSRCP in Palnadu district, a police officer said.

Around 5:30 pm, the Election Commission’s flying squad, reinforced by local police, raided a warehouse in an industrial area, opened it and snatched saris, police officials said.

“Based on a tip-off, the Election Commission flying squad along with the police raided the warehouse in the industrial area. They found 5,472 sarees with YSRCP labels worth Rs 3.36 crore,” the police official told PTI.

As many as 114 boxes, each containing 48 saris, were confiscated. The official said that each sari box has a picture of YSRCP president and Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister YS Jagan Mohan Reddy printed on the top.

According to police, the warehouse was owned by Perumalla Gopal, who leased it to YSRCP leader Sattenapalle’s Bhavrisheti Venkata Sur Bavisetty Venkata Subramaniam.

Police have not yet made an arrest in the case but said Subramaniam is on the run. They are registering a case under Section 188 and 171 (E) of IPC.

Excluding today’s seizure, the Election Commission has seized cash, precious metals, narcotics and other items worth Rs 176 crore since January 1 ahead of simultaneous Legislative Assembly and Lok Sabha elections in Andhra Pradesh.
