Organs from 19-year-old brain-dead student give three people a new lease of life

Kidney and liver of 19-year-old Vikram allocated to AIIMS Jodhpur

Jodhpur:

A Class 12 student who was declared brain-dead after being seriously injured in a road accident has given a new lease of life to three people after his family decided to donate his organs, officials at AIIMS Jodhpur said on Wednesday.

One kidney and liver of 19-year-old Vikram were allotted to AIIMS Jodhpur itself, while the other kidney was allotted to SMS Hospital in Jaipur. His lungs will be sent to a listed patient at Medanta Hospital in Gurgaon, they said.

“This makes Vikram the silent hero in this extraordinary organ donation story as he gave three people new life,” said Medical Director Deepak Jha.

The procedure was initiated with the consent of his family after Vikram was declared brain dead, he said, adding that Vikram met with the fatal accident on Monday while returning home after appearing for his Higher Secondary Board examinations.

With the help of the government and police, a green corridor was set up to transfer the kidneys to SMS Jaipur. The dispatch was sent from the AIIMS campus around 12:30 pm on Wednesday.

“Today, AIIMS Jodhpur not only achieves a milestone but also reaffirms the immense potential that exists in the human spirit with the support of the government,” Jha added.
