Andrej Karpathy, an artificial intelligence researcher and one of the founding members of OpenAI, posted on social media platform X that he left the Microsoft-backed company on Monday.

The news marks a major departure from OpenAI, one of the top labs racing to develop increasingly capable artificial intelligence.

“My immediate plan is to work on my personal project and see what happens,” Capaldi said in the post on Tuesday.

Karpathy joined OpenAI for the second time last year after previously serving as senior director of artificial intelligence at Tesla, where he played a key role in developing the electric car maker’s artificial intelligence and driver assistance technology.

Karpathy studied under the famous artificial intelligence scientist Li Feifei at Stanford University and joined Tesla as one of the earliest employees of OpenAI. He recently talked about the idea of artificial intelligence, or large language models, as a new kind of computer operating system.
