MILAN: Italy’s data protection agency said on Monday it told OpenAI that its artificial intelligence app ChatGPT violated data protection rules.

Regulators believe there were potential breaches after launching an investigation last year, the regulator said in a statement.

It added that OpenAI has 30 days to present its defense arguments.

Last year, Italian data authorities briefly banned ChatGPT for allegedly violating EU privacy rules.

Back in April last year, the Italian agency accused OpenAI of failing to check the age of ChatGPT users and criticized the “lack of any legal basis” to justify the large-scale collection and storage of personal data.

In a statement, the privacy agency set out a series of “specific” requirements to be met early. Italy was the first Western European country to oppose OpenAI, but the rapid development of the technology has attracted the attention of lawmakers and regulators in several countries.

Many experts say new regulations are needed to govern AI because of its potential impact on national security, jobs and education.
