Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) suffered their 6th defeat in 7 matches against Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH), a team that is having a strong season in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024. Chasing a target of 288, the highest in IPL history, RCB got off to a good start with Virat Kohli and Faf du Plessis giving their all. However, their dissolution, and the ensuing collapse of the middle-order, allowed the Sunrisers to take control before Dinesh Karthik launched an unprecedented blitz. The veteran wicketkeeper-batsman smashed 83 off 35 balls to keep RCB’s hopes alive. Even though he couldn’t take the team home, Karthik’s efforts won the hearts of many on social media.
Even during the match, former England captain Kevin Pietersen had a brilliant comment about Karthik, saying, “Never seen a commentator bat so well.”
In his statement, Peterson was referring to Katic’s comments over the past year or so. The wicketkeeper-batsman is one of the commentators on multiple India overseas assignments for the broadcaster. He has also served as a commentator for many of the home series for the Indian team. But, when it comes to T20 cricket, especially in the IPL, he remains one of the best finishers in the game.
After the match, RCB captain Faf du Plessis admitted that his team had nowhere to hide. But even though he was chasing the highest target in IPL history, he appreciated the efforts put in by the batting team.
“We (batting performance) were much better; that was a proper T20 wicket. I just wanted to get close in the end, but 280 was far away. It was tough. We tried a few things; we tried different things. There were times when When your confidence is low, there’s no way to hide it. Similar to the batting angle, we need to make sure the run rate doesn’t drop after the power play,” Du Plessis said at the post-match presentation ceremony.
“The guys put their hands up and never gave up (in the chase). It was great to see the game. Thirty to forty was a bit too much from a bowling perspective. The important thing is to go away and refresh your mind “It’s a mental game and sometimes you feel like your head is going to explode and when you get back into the game you have to give it your all,” he added.
