Navy intercepts hijacked Iranian ship in Arabian Sea, deploys warships

The hijacked fishing boat was intercepted on March 29.

New Delhi:

The Indian Navy responded to a possible pirate attack on an Iranian fishing vessel in the Arabian Sea and on Friday diverted two naval vessels to intercept the hijacked vessel.

The Indian Navy on Friday evening received information about a possible piracy incident on board the Iranian fishing vessel ‘Al-Kambar 786’.

Thereafter, two Indian Navy ships deployed for maritime security operations in the Arabian Sea diverted to intercept the hijacked fishing boat.

At the time of the incident, the Iranian ship was located about 90 nautical miles southwest of Socotra Island and was reportedly boarded by nine armed pirates.

The hijacked fishing boat was intercepted on March 29.

According to the latest news, the Indian Navy is currently conducting an operation to rescue the hijacked fishing boat and its crew.

“The Indian Navy remains committed to ensuring maritime security in the region and the safety of seafarers irrespective of their nationality,” the statement added.

It is worth noting that the Indian Navy has recently conducted a number of high-intensity operations against pirate attacks.

Earlier this month, the Indian Navy conducted a daring operation to intercept the pirate ship Roon that was under attack nearly 2,600 kilometers off the Indian coast and forced the pirate ship to stop through a calibration operation.

During the 40-hour rescue operation, the Calcutta successfully forced all 35 pirates to surrender, ensuring the safe evacuation of the 17 crew members on the pirate ship and no one was injured.

In another operation, the Indian Navy quickly responded to a distress call from the Gulf of Aden and rescued 21 crew members, including an Indian national, after a merchant ship caught fire after being hit by a missile.

Last month, in response to a distress call from a fishing vessel, an Indian Navy ship deployed on a maritime security mission in the North Arabian Sea provided damage control assistance and strengthened the hull to enable the vessel to be safely transported further.

The Indian Navy reaffirms its unwavering commitment to maintaining maritime security and ensuring the safety of seafarers operating in these dangerous waters. The Indian Navy said in a statement that this action by the Indian Navy proves India’s determination to combat piracy and uphold international maritime law.
