The family of a man who died after an attack at an Edinburgh bus station say they are “shocked” by the senseless murder.

Nashir Ahmed, 65, and his friend were approached and attacked by another man at around 8.30pm on Sunday, March 10.

Mr Ahmed died at the Royal Hospital Edinburgh On Friday, detectives were Treat his death as murder.

Mr Ahmed’s friend, a 48-year-old man, was treated and released from hospital with serious injuries to his legs and face.

“He loved life and cared about all his family and friends”

In a statement issued through police Scotland Mr Ahmed’s family said on Monday: “Nasir was a loving husband and father.

“He was an important part of our family and we are devastated by his loss.

“He was actively involved in the Bangladeshi community in Edinburgh and will be greatly missed.

“He loved life and cared about his family and friends. We will always remember his warmth and kindness.”

The incident occurred on the city’s Ferry Road, near the intersection of Grand Junction Street and Coburg Street.

Detective Chief Inspector George Calder previously described the attack as a “completely random and unprovoked attack” and said police were following “a number of active investigative leads”.

The suspect is described as black, about 30 years old, with short dark hair. He was wearing a red tartan scarf and a long black jacket with a hood at the time of the attack.

‘The situation is heartbreaking’

DCI Calder said: “A family feels a sense of loss when they lose someone who has been so important to their lives.

“The situation is heartbreaking and I can’t imagine the pain they are feeling during these difficult times.

“We will continue to follow up on a number of lines of inquiry and I would again appeal to anyone with information about this crime or those responsible to contact us.

“Any small piece of information could be vital to our ongoing investigations, so please do pass it on.”
