A man has been arrested on suspicion of murder after a human torso was found wrapped in plastic at a Salford nature reserve.

Chief Superintendent Tony Creely said on Sunday morning that the man, aged in his 20s, was arrested on Saturday night and remains in custody.

The body was found in Kersal Dale, near Redford Street, on Thursday.

Greater Manchester Police said the man’s torso was believed to be over 40 years old.

Police previously said they found nothing other than human remains during the search.

Mr Creeley said: “At this time, we are continuing to work to establish the identity of the person whose remains were found.”

“Preliminary forensic and DNA testing indicates the victim is a male, possibly over 40 years old, and was only a few days old.

“We have a team of specially trained detectives within our Major Incident Team working around the clock to investigate the full circumstances leading up to the victim being found here.

“Last night we arrested a local man in his 20s on suspicion of murder.

“He remains in custody and will be interviewed by detectives later today.”
