Shami missed the home T20I series against Australia after the ICC World Cup last year and was ruled out of the entire tour of South Africa. He also missed the Afghanistan series. He also missed five Test matches against England after that.
The 33-year-old did not feature in the recently concluded five-match Test series against England. He last played for India in the ODI World Cup final against Australia in November. The senior pacer ended up being the highest wicket-taker in the tournament and dismissed 24 batsmen in just 7 games.
Shami made a huge contribution to GT’s success over two seasons. The 33-year-old bowler took 20 wickets in 2022 and then had an even stronger performance in IPL 2023, taking 28 wickets at an average of 18.64. Shami’s new ball has been particularly devastating.
