Somalia’s al-Shabab militants attacked a heavily fortified hotel in central Mogadishu on Thursday night, witnesses and officials said.
A resident told VOA there was an explosion outside the SYL Hotel. The witness said moments later he heard gunshots coming from inside the hotel.
The militant group al-Shabab claimed responsibility for the attack and its members were fighting inside the hotel.
Two security guards, who spoke on condition of anonymity, also said militants had entered the hotel.
A security official told VOA Somali that several people were injured in the attack, including officials and lawmakers.
Somali government police have yet to comment on the attack.
The hotel is frequented by citizens and politicians and has been the target of several attacks by al-Shabaab in the past.
