If you’re a corporate employee or simply have a workflow that requires heavy use of online video conferencing apps like Microsoft Teams or Google Meet, you know that finding a quiet place for meetings can be tricky. When you’re in a meeting, all kinds of background audio creeps in, which can hinder your ability to communicate with your teammates.

Fortunately, Microsoft Teams is now testing a new Canary beta version for Windows, which introduces the new Voice Clarity feature that was previously exclusive to Surface. This feature will be available on a range of devices, including ARM-based devices and x64. “We’re expanding Voice Clarity available on Surface devices and making it available to more people,” Microsoft announced in a blog post.

What is it and how does it work?

Microsoft says this AI feature works by canceling echoes, suppressing background noise and reducing reverberation in real time.

“This feature is enabled by default and can be used by applications that use the communication signal processing mode, such as Phone Link and WhatsApp. No additional hardware is required because Voice Clarity is supported on x64 and Arm64 CPUs.” Microsoft pointed out.

This technology could also be suitable for computer games, as they will be able to use artificial intelligence to provide a richer sound experience. That said, this feature may be more convenient for people who often need to work.

Also, in a way, this is reminiscent of Apple’s Voice Isolation feature that exists on MacOS, iOS, and even iPad OS. It also blocks ambient noise and emphasizes your voice. It works with third-party apps like FaceTime, WhatsApp, and even Zoom.
