Britain’s competition watchdog said Wednesday it is seeking comments on AI partnerships between Microsoft and Mistral AI, as well as between Amazon and Anthropic.
The Competition and Markets Authority also said it wanted to hear the views of third parties on Microsoft’s appointment of former Inflexion AI employees and related arrangements.
Microsoft last month appointed DeepMind co-founder Mustafa Suleiman to head a newly created consumer AI unit and hired several employees from its Inflection AI startup.
The regulator said it had not made any findings on whether the deals fell within UK merger rules or raised competition concerns.
Microsoft said it believes “common business practices such as hiring talent or making partial investments in AI start-ups promote competition and do not amount to a merger”.
A spokesperson said, “We will provide the UK Competition and Markets Authority with the information necessary to quickly complete its investigation.”
Amazon said that “it is unprecedented for the CMA to review this type of collaboration”.
A spokesperson said, “Unlike partnerships between other AI startups and larger technology companies, our collaboration with Anthropic involves limited investment, Amazon is not given a board director or supervisory role, and Anthropic is based on multiple cloud providers for its own cloud services.” Driving the model.” ,
The CMA is already considering Microsoft’s partnership with Open AI and asked for ideas in December.
“The CMA is also considering feedback received earlier this year on Microsoft’s partnership with OpenAI and is currently awaiting the information sought from the companies,” it said on Wednesday.
It said the move to investigate the Microsoft-Mistral AI and Amazon-Anthropic partnerships comes after a recent report on the AI Foundation model identified “an interconnected web” of more than 90 partnerships and strategic investments involving similar companies .
In January, the US Federal Trade Commission ordered OpenAI, Microsoft, Alphabet, Amazon and Anthropic to provide information about recent investments and partnerships involving generic AI companies and cloud service providers.
CMA is inviting ideas till May 9. This is the first part of its information gathering process and comes before a formal investigation begins.
