Mayor said, Delhi civic body will start investigation into Ghazipur fire

Mayor Shaili Oberoi on Monday said the Delhi Municipal Corporation will start an investigation into the fire that broke out at the Ghazipur landfill site a day earlier.

Earlier in the day, Delhi Cabinet Minister Atishi also said that an investigation will be conducted to find out the cause of the fire incident.

“At present, we are waiting for the (Ghazipur landfill) site to cool down. We will set up an investigation to investigate the cause of the fire. Appropriate action will be taken based on the investigation,” Ms Oberoi told PTI.

A massive fire broke out at a landfill site in East Delhi on Sunday evening and poisonous smoke choked the people of the area on Monday.

Many residents told PTI Video that they are facing difficulty in breathing as well as burning sensation in the eyes due to the smoke.

The Delhi government has directed its environment department to submit a detailed report within 48 hours on the cause of the fire along with an action plan to prevent similar incidents at such landfill sites during the summer season.

Oberoi visited the landfill site earlier in the day and claimed the situation was under control.

“As soon as I came to know (about the fire incident), I directed officials to take action and inspect the site. They were here the whole night. The situation is better now. The situation is better. According to a senior Delhi Fire Service official, the fire is still going on at the Ghazipur dumping ground and more than 20 fire engines have been deployed at the spot to douse the flames.

Officials cited hot and dry weather as a possible cause of the fire.

Police have registered an FIR against unknown persons under IPC section 336 (endangering life or personal safety of others) and section 278 (rendering environment injurious to health) at Ghazipur police station and investigation has been initiated. .
