Six-time world champion boxer MC Mary Kom on Friday resigned as the head of the Indian delegation at the upcoming Paris Olympics, saying she had “no choice” due to some personal reasons. Indian Olympic Association (IOA) president PT Usha announced that Mary Kom had requested her removal from her post in a letter sent to her. “I consider it an honor to serve my country in every way possible, and I am mentally prepared. However, I regret that I cannot assume this noble responsibility due to personal reasons and want to resign.” the 41-year-old said in a letter to Usha. “It’s embarrassing to walk away from a commitment and I rarely do it, but I had no choice. I came here with great expectations to cheer for my country and the athletes competing in these Olympics,” she added.

The IOA announced her appointment on March 21.

The famous boxer, who was also a bronze medalist at the 2012 London Olympics, will serve as the head of logistics for the country’s delegation during the Games from July 26 to August 11.

“We regret the resignation of Olympic medalist and IOC Athletes Commission President Mary Kom for personal reasons. We respect her decision and her privacy,” Usha said in a statement.

“I will hold appropriate consultations and announce Mary Kom’s replacement soon.” Usha said she spoke with Mary Kom after receiving the letter.

“I fully understand her request and respect her decision. I also expressed to her that the IOA and I will always support her. I also ask that everyone respect the privacy of this legendary boxer,” she said.
