At the start of the hearing, the committee played a video in which children described being bullied on social media platforms. Senators told stories of young men who committed suicide after being blackmailed for money after sharing photos with sexual predators.
“Do you want to apologize now to the victims who have been harmed by your product?” Hawley asked, noting that the hearing was being televised live.
Zuckerberg stood and turned to address the families of the victims.
“I’m sorry for what you’ve been through. No one should have to go through what your family has been through, which is why we invest so much and we will continue our industry-wide efforts to make sure no one suffers .”Going through what your family had to endure,” he said.
Hawley harshly criticized Zuckerberg in a controversial exchange. “Your product is killing people,” Hawley, whose company owns social media platforms Facebook and Instagram, told Zuckerberg.
