Mumbai:

A Mumbai court has sentenced a 32-year-old man to life imprisonment for murdering a worker in Malad in 2014 and stealing Rs 800.

On April 8, Additional Sessions Judge (Dindoshi Bench) SN Salve convicted Sanjay Tiwari under Section 302 (murder) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).

In an order issued on Wednesday, the court said the accused was found guilty of murdering Rohit Singh by entering his room and attacking him with an iron plate.

However, the court said the case did not fall into the rarest category and sentenced him to life imprisonment.

The prosecution said the defendant, victim and complainant were all laborers and had lived in temporary housing near the construction site.

Items worth Rs 800 were stolen from the contractor’s room. After searching, the workers found that the thief was Tiwari.

The complainant, who is also the victim’s brother, said the incident led to animosity between the accused and other workers.

On October 27, 2014, the complainant and his roommate found Mr. Singh lying in a pool of blood in his room.

The victim’s brother suspected Sanjay Tiwari of killing Rohit Singh because he had a grudge against the workers after discovering his theft. He reported the incident to the local police station, and the police arrested the defendant after investigation.

During the trial, the prosecution questioned 13 witnesses, including the victim’s brother.

Taking into account the circumstantial and medical evidence, the court found that the facts clearly established that the defendant had killed Mr. Singh.
