A man suspected of wielding a machete in broad daylight has been arrested outside a metro station.

Video circulating on social media showed the suspect sitting on the floor outside Clapham North station in south London at around 6.30pm on Easter Sunday, handcuffed.

People in a nearby pub were left “horrified” after witnessing the scene while watching the Manchester City men’s match against Arsenal.

Onlookers praised police after an undercover officer confiscated the weapon.

An eyewitness who asked not to be named told Mail online: “I had been watching a football match in a bar and after the match I heard sirens going off. Then I saw the police arresting someone.”

They added that a woman at the scene questioned why police arrested the man, to which police responded “because he had a knife.”

The witness, who said he had lived in London for nearly three years, said it was not an everyday incident but people around him acted as if it was a “normal” thing.

A Metropolitan Police spokesman said: “At around 6.30pm on Sunday, March 31, a man was arrested on Clapham Road, Clapham, on suspicion of possession of an offensive weapon.

“A knife was found. No one was injured.”
