The Ahmedabad crime branch has arrested two accused for allegedly attacking some overseas students at a Gujarat university hostel.

Describing the details of the incident, Ahmedabad Police Commissioner GS Malik said that around 300 foreign students were studying in the Gujarat University and around 75 of them were staying in Block A of the hostel.

“Last night around 10:30 pm, a group of students were praying. About 20-25 people came and asked them why they were praying there, adding that they should be praying in the mosque. An argument broke out among them from outside People pelted stones at them and damaged their rooms,” the commissioner said.

“Police took prompt action and an FIR has been registered against 20 to 25 people. Action will be taken against those involved in the incident. One of the outsiders has been identified. The law and order situation is now under control. Two injured students from Sri Lanka and Tajikistan Stan is hospitalized,” he added.

Neerja Arun Gupta, vice-chancellor of Gujarat University, said an FIR has been registered in the matter and the police and government are taking the incident seriously.
