Man arrested after trying to rob Ohio bank using translation app

Don’t know how to say “give cash” in English, but it requires robbing a bank. What does one do? Use a translation app. Yes, that’s exactly what happened in Ohio.

A 20-year-old Venezuelan man was arrested by Sandusky police in Ohio after he tried to rob a local bank using a translation app on his phone. The app displayed messages such as “Take money” and “Put money in bag,” FOX8 news portal reported.

Sandusky police believe bank robbery suspect Yeixon Brito-Gonzalez is an illegal immigrant.

“We can’t tell if he’s here legally,” Sandusky Police Chief Jared Oliver said. “But he has no identification.”

A customer called police to report a man at the bank who was silent and trying to hide behind the teller’s counter.

According to Fox8, bank security video shows the suspect using a translation app on his phone to communicate the robbery request to the teller.

The app allegedly displayed messages such as “Get money” and “Put money in bag.”

“I’ve been in law enforcement for over 20 years and this is the first time I’ve encountered something like this, someone using a translation app to try to rob a bank. It’s also the first time our police have dealt with this situation,” one police officer said, as quoted by Fox8 say.

The suspect left the bank when bank staff refused to give him any money.

Sandusky police quickly located the suspect, and a Spanish-speaking officer read him his rights and spoke with him.

According to police reports, the suspect claimed he had recently lost his job and needed money.

According to Fox8, the suspect denied trying to rob the bank and insisted he just asked the teller to put money in his bag.

Brito-Gonzalez faces charges of attempted robbery, attempted theft and criminal trespassing.

Chief Oliver also said federal authorities are interested in questioning suspects.

“I noticed that Customs and Border Patrol detained him,” Oliver said.

The attempted robbery occurred on April 4.
