Malaysia has rejected an offer to host the 2026 Commonwealth Games, putting the games at risk of being canceled for the first time since World War II.
Officials said the £100m funding provided by the Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF) was insufficient and they had not had enough time to plan.

Malaysian government spokesman Fahmi Fazl said on Friday: “If we had longer time, we would definitely do it, but because the time is short, we definitely can’t.
“When we assessed the feasibility of hosting the Games, we found the time and cost required to be particularly prohibitive.”
About 70 countries and territories that were once part of the British Empire take part in the Games, but in recent years it has struggled to find a host.
The past six editions of the event have all been held in the UK or Australia.

Birmingham hosted the last edition of the event in 2022, but it was originally scheduled to take place in 2026.
When South Africa was denied hosting rights due to a lack of progress in preparations, it offered to transfer.
This left the CGF scrambling to find a new site, leaving Victoria as the only viable option at the time after several other cities withdrew from the bidding process due to cost concerns.
Questions have also been repeatedly raised about the relevance of a tournament with such colonial origins.
The CGF has yet to comment on Malaysia’s withdrawal.
