The Know Your Candidate app is available on the Google Play Store and Apple App (Representative)

New Delhi:

Chief Election Commissioner Rajiv Kumar told a packed press conference in the national capital on Saturday ahead of announcing the date for the upcoming Lok Sabha elections that the poll watchdog has launched a new tool called “Know Your Candidate” ” (KYC) new mobile application that will enable voters to find out whether any election candidate in their constituency has a criminal record.

The Chief Election Commissioner informed that the application is available for download on Android and iOS platforms.

Expanding on the new mobile app, the poll panel chief said: “We have launched a new mobile app through which voters can find out whether the candidates contesting to represent them in the Lok Sabha have criminal backgrounds. The The application process is called Know Your Candidate or KYC.”

At a press conference, the commission announced that the Lok Sabha elections will be held in seven phases, while assembly elections in the four states of Andhra Pradesh, Odisha, Arunachal Pradesh and Sikkim will also be held simultaneously in phases.

Sharing more details on the KYC application, the CEC noted that voters have the right to know the criminal records, if any, of candidates in their constituencies and their assets and liabilities.

“Voters can now also check on their own the assets and liabilities held by candidates with criminal records. All relevant information in this regard will be provided in this application,” Mr Kumar said.

The poll leader added: “Candidates with criminal records must publish this information three times in newspapers, on television or make it public.”

“Political parties offering tickets to these tainted candidates must explain why they selected them over other more deserving candidates. They must clearly state the basis on which they selected candidates with criminal backgrounds,” Kumar said.

The Election Commission has released the Know Your Candidate (KYC) app on its website, which is available on Google Play Store and Apple App Store, while also sharing a QR code to download the app.
