Chandigarh:
Shiromani Akali Dal on Monday said it will support Indian National Lok Dal candidates in the Lok Sabha elections in Haryana.
The decision was taken at a meeting of SAD’s Haryana unit, which was chaired by the party’s state affairs in-charge Balwinder Singh Bhunder, a party statement said.
The party’s Haryana president Sharanjit Singh Sotha and INLD general secretary Abhay Singh Chautala participated in the meeting held at the SAD head office here.
According to the statement, Mr Chautala thanked the Akali Dal for its decision to wholeheartedly support INLD in the Lok Sabha elections.
Voting for 10 Lok Sabha seats in Haryana will be held on May 25 in the sixth round of the seven-phase general elections.
Mr Chautala said INLD and SAD were traditional alliance partners and their unity would help his party emerge victorious in the upcoming elections.
INLD, led by former Haryana Chief Minister Om Prakash Chautala, is contesting on all 10 seats in the state. The party has so far announced candidates for six seats.
According to the statement, Mr Chautala highlighted “how efforts are being made to marginalize and even eliminate regional parties”.
“Only regional parties can fulfill the aspirations of the people of the region and I am confident that by joining hands of INLD and Akali Dal, the aspirations of the people of Haryana will be fulfilled,” he said.
SAD’s Bhundar said, “The party has taken feedback from its cadre in Haryana and there is a widespread opinion that SAD should support INLD which alone stands in support of farmers, farm laborers as well as the poor and the underprivileged.” He said that Akali Dal will soon field its Haryana team to support INLD.
