Locals outraged as US company plans to raise 30,000 monkeys in cities for medical research

The monkeys will be sent to pharmaceutical companies for medical research.

A plan to build a 200-acre mini-city for monkeys in the US state of Georgia is facing fierce opposition from local residents and animal rights groups.according to protector, the facility is designed to house 30,000 macaques for research purposes. It was planned by Safer Human Medicine, the company behind the $396 million Simian City. The outlet further claimed that the plan involves gathering thousands of long-tailed macaques into huge barn-like structures and sending them to universities and pharmaceutical companies for medical research.

But residents of Banbridge, with a population of less than 15,000, called on local authorities to block the proposed city. “They’re an invasive species, and if there were 30,000 monkeys, we would be overrun with monkeys,” said city resident Ted Lee. protector. “I don’t think anyone wants 30,000 monkeys next door,” added David Barber, who lives near the new facility.

Animal rights groups have also rallied against the plan, arguing that raising primates for medical testing is cruel.

“This move not only further threatens the survival of these primates in the wild, but perpetuates the cycle we should be breaking out of. We urge local officials to reject the proposal to build this facility and the federal government to prioritize science that will ultimately save humanity and animal life,” said Katherine Conley, vice president of animal research issues at the Humane Society.

PETA stated on its website Bainbridge residents have filed a lawsuit against the authority and its officials who voted to approve plans to build a monkey breeding facility.
