Erode, Tamil Nadu:

A lemon fetched Rs 35,000 at an auction held at a private temple in a nearby village, temple authorities said.

As per tradition, lemons and other items, including fruits, offered to Lord Shiva were auctioned during the Mahasivarathiri celebrations at the Pazhapoosaian temple near Sivagiri village, 35 km from here, on Friday evening.

Temple authorities said as many as 15 devotees participated in the auction and one lemon was sold to a devotee from Erode for Rs 35,000.

The temple priest places the auctioned lemons in front of the presiding deity and performs a small pooja ceremony before returning them to the highest bidder in the auction in the presence of hundreds of devotees.

It is believed that the person who bids the highest and gets the lemon will gain wealth and good health in the years to come.
