Police on Friday detained a Kerala Students Union worker in connection with the attempt to murder a Students Federation of India (SFI) leader at Maharaja College here.
Mohammad Izlan, a third-year degree student, was arrested on Wednesday night in connection with the hacking of SFI Maharaja’s College unit secretary Abdul Nasar PA, police said. Police said he is an activist of Kerala Students Union (KSU), the student wing of the Congress, and is one of the more than 14 accused in the case.
According to the FIR, Nassar was attacked inside the campus late on Wednesday night by activists of KSU and Welfare Party’s student wing Fraternity Movement.
This was reportedly in response to a protest by an SFI leader regarding another incident inside the college. Police said a case has been registered against 14 KSU and fraternity workers and five other students in this regard.
According to the FIR, the accused had come with the intention of attacking and killing the victim. “The accused stopped Nasar near the chemistry laboratory inside the campus, threatened to kill him and attacked him multiple times with a dagger all over his body,” it said.
Maharaja’s College was closed on Thursday following clashes between rival student organizations on the campus.
