Why is Elon Musk visiting China unannounced amid Tesla troubles?

The world’s richest man and Tesla CEO Elon Musk reached China’s capital Beijing on Sunday.

Chinese media by Xinhua Musk was reported to have met with Premier Li Qiang in the capital, where Musk briefed the billionaire on Tesla’s development of successful US-China commercial ties in the country.

Four years ago, the Texas-based carmaker released its full self-driving autonomous software, however, it could not reach China despite it being the second largest market.

The Tesla CEO, while replying to a user on its X platform, formerly known as Twitter, had earlier said that the automaker could make the FSD available to customers in China very soon.

China’s competitors, including Xpeng, also released similar autonomous software to gain an edge over the American carmaker.

Musk also termed Chinese carmakers as “the most competitive car companies in the world.”

according to a Guardian “Musk is expected to get approval to transfer data collected in the country abroad to train algorithms for his autonomous driving technologies,” the report said.

Tesla has reams of data collected from the Shanghai facility since 2021 and it was not sent to the US.

On the other hand, an auto show is also going on in Beijing which is going to end on May 4, in which Tesla does not have any stall or booth.
